Instant cozy warmth for your backyard!

I personally love the cozy warmth that a fireplace provides to a home and even a back yard! Our customers had that exact thought in their mind when they moved into their home and began planning their backyard. When their patio was installed they had us come over and install a conduit with a gas line in it which would sit below the patio ready to be connected to a future back yard gas fireplace!

Here is our work in progress for the new fireplace in the backyard – I am excited to see the finished product once the guys get the fireplace in the frame and then the customer has the unit bricked around.

The first photo shows the conduit for the gas line going under the patio. The second photo shows the unit and the metal frame that the unit is mounted in. The third photo shows the unit and the gas line coming out of the conduit below the patio.

Very innovative and an excellent way to enjoy more outdoor living!

An awesome addition and investment for a back yard… instant, cozy warmth without the work of wood!

Spring Check Up – HVAC System

With the heat of the summer on the way, now is the time to be thinking about the heat your home HVAC system provided you with all winter! Just like maintaining a car, it is very important to maintain your home HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning system) just the same in the Spring and Fall to ensure optimal performance and energy savings.

In between your seasonal cleaning and servicing you should ensure that you keep your hot and cold air registers clear, and if you have pets vacuum them off regularly to clear away any hair or dirt caught in them. Also ensure your outside vents are clear from any trees, plants and dirt. Just like the registers inside, the outside vents must be clear for air flow and safety.

One tip that is easy for most home owners to do is to ensure you change or clean your filter regularly. Especially now that spring has finally sprung and having our doors and windows open, the dust and dirt that is blowing around outside can get into your home and then into your heating ducts. If we have another cold front and the heating system needs to be turned on, all that dust and dirt in the ducts or sitting on the registers could get sucked into the heating system. If your filter is clean, the filter will do its job and catch these particles, however if the filter is dirty, this will clog the filter even more forcing your system to work harder to get the air flow through. This can cause the system to over work and could cause it to over heat, which could result in the system breaking down and parts requiring to be replaced.

With some TLC and Preventative Maintenance you can ensure your home or business HVAC System is always operating efficiently !

BBQ Season is Here!~ Cooking with Gas!

Its the time of year we have all been waiting for! Spring has officially been here since March 20th, however it certainly hasn’t felt like BBQ weather since then!

Lets hope its safe to say that the snow is now gone until November – December would be even better ;)

Are you still lugging around your propane tanks? Did you know that Union Gas is now offering a promotion to all new customers to switch over to gas, if you are considering this for your Furnace, Hot Water Heater, Dryer, Fireplace or Stove why not have our technician install a gas connection for a bbq as well! Before we got our gas bbq I never realized how convenient it would be – especially for a mom who is coming home from work and if my husband is working late, I have to get dinner started. Using a gas bbq couldn’t be simpler and I never have to worry about running out of gas!

Using a gas BBQ is much like a propane BBQ, except instead of turning the handle on the propane tank to open the valve, you are turning a lever to open the gas line to the BBQ, then you light it just the same. Hopefully your BBQ still has an ignitor on it, they do work wonderful unless a puppy chews it off! Otherwise just use a BBQ lighter in the side underneath and turn the knob, once the fumes meet the lighter it lights. Very simple and with gas very quick heat.

Not only is the BBQ simple to light, it heats up fast. I typically start the BBQ, then come back inside prep dinner for the BBQ and by this time the grill is up to temperature and ready for the food. I will cook as much as I can on the BBQ – hey it means less dishes and we arent over heating the house by cooking inside – this is very important during the hotter days! AND if you have a cottage – having a gas BBQ is a no-brainer! You can arrive at the cottage, turn the lever and you are ready to cook! Especially at a cottage which is shared by more than one family, no one needs to worry about who filled the propane tank last!

Do your kids love pizza? Grab a couple pizza grill pans, let them help you make them, while you are making them the BBQ is heating up, remember not to heat it too hot (gas heats up fast!) and within minutes you can have a pizza hot off  the grill!

Personally as a mom, having a gas BBQ has made my life SO much easier! The biggest benefit to me is I do not have to worry about how much propane is in the tank, being connected to our gas line we always have fuel for the BBQ. Another mom bonus, less dishes! Cooking on the bbq not only gives your food amazing flavour but it also cuts down on dishes! Another mom bonus is cooking with gas is very affordable, much more affordable than propane is ! In fact when we moved last year we moved to a home with a wall oven, an electric wall oven. Keeping this in mind we decided to purchase a larger BBQ, the BBQ we bought is a Broil King and it has 2 seperate cooking spaces – we can cook a lot of food all at the same time and at different temperatures!

Tips to Save Water at Home – Water Conservation

With the launch of the new “Because Water Matters” Website by the CIPH – Canadian Institute of Plumbing and Heating in honour or Earth Day, this article below is one of the links you will find on their website. This information is directly from the Alliance for Water Efficiency website to save water when you are at home!

Some very useful tips! Be sure to check their website for their Business Tips For Saving Water as well!

Laundry

When doing laundry, always wash full loads.

•Conventional washers built before 2011 typically use about 40 gallons per load; resource-efficient washer may use as little as 15 gallons per load.

•Adjust the water level in the washer to the amount needed for the load. Some of the new efficient washers will do this automatically.

When it’s time to replace the clothes washer, choose a high-efficiency washer with a low water factor.

•The smaller the water factor, the more efficient the clothes washer.

•Energy Star models currently have a maximum of 6.0, although many well-performing machines are available with lower water factors. Look for the lowest water factor available to achieve the highest water savings.

•For more information and resources, visit the AWE Residential Clothes Washer Introduction Page.

Dishwashing

If washing dishes by hand, fill the sink with water rather than continually running the tap.

Install an efficient dishwasher.

•Technological advances in dishwashers make it possible to use less water to achieve the same goal. Selecting a new dishwasher that uses less water per cycle will reduce household water use.

◦Dishwashers use less water than handwashing, particularly if you limit pre-rinsing.

•For examples of dishwasher models and their water use, visit the CEE Qualifying Residential Dishwasher List

Only wash full loads of dishes in the dishwasher.

•For more information and resources, visit the AWE Residential Dishwasher introduction Page.

Avoid using running water to thaw frozen foods.

•Instead, defrost in the refrigerator overnight.

Faucets

Find and fix any leaky faucets.

•A faucet leaking 60 drops per minute will waste 192 gallons per month. That is equal to 2,304 gallons per year.

Install efficient faucets and/or faucet aerators.

•The U.S. EPA WaterSense program labels efficient faucets and aerators that use a maximum of 1.5 gallons per minute.

•Look for the WaterSense label when selecting new faucets or aerators.

Turn off the faucet.

•When lathering hands, shaving, or brushing teeth.

Landscaping

If an irrigation system is used, make sure it is properly set up and maintained.

•Irrigate hydrozones based upon the plants’ water needs.

•Install a weather-based SMART irrigation controller. It is essential that SMART controllers are properly programmed and maintained.

•Install and maintain a rain sensor, either wireless or wired, on the irrigation controller if it does not have one built-in.

•Regularly inspect the sprinkler heads to make sure they are not damaged or malfunctioning.

•Adjust sprinklers so they are not spraying water on paved surfaces such as the sidewalk or driveway.

•For more information, visit the AWE Landscape, Irrigation, and Outdoor Water Use Page and the Xeriscape Council of New Mexico’s Xeriscape Principles Page.

Landscape with water-wise landscaping principles.

•Use native plants or plants that require little water to thrive in your region.

•Plant turf grass only in areas where people will use it actively for recreation.

•Organize your landscape into hydro-zones. Hydro-zones are areas of landscape with plant and vegetation that have similar water requirements. This prevents over-watering some plants and under-watering others.

•Keep soil healthy and add mulch to prevent water loss through evaporation.

•If watering with a hose, make sure it has a shut-off nozzle.

•Water in the morning to prevent water loss due to evaporation. Avoid watering when it is windy.

•Use a rain barrel to collect water for use in the landscape.

•Add a graywater system to collect water from your washing machine or shower and bath, and use it in the landscape.

Showers

If it takes a long time for the hot water to reach the shower, use it as an opportunity to collect water for other uses, such as watering houseplants.

Replace showerheads that have a flow rate greater than 2.5 gallons per minute (the current national energy policy act standard).

•If the showerhead is not labeled, the flow rate can be checked by catching the water in a 1-gallon bucket. If it takes less than 24 seconds to fill up, the showerhead flow rate is more than 2.5 gallons per minute. The U.S. EPA WaterSense program labels efficient showerheads that use a maximum 2.0 gallons per minute.

•For more information and resources, visit the AWE Residential Shower Introduction Page.

Take shorter showers.

•Reducing a 10-minute shower to 5 minutes will save 12.5 gallons of water if the showerhead has a flow rate of 2.5 gallons per minute (even more if the showerhead has a higher flow rate).

Toilets

Replace toilets installed before 1994 (1992 for Texas and California) with High-Efficiency Toilets (HETs).

•Replacing an older toilet that uses 3.50 gallons per flush (gpf) with a HET that uses 1.28 gpf will save 2.22 gpf. The EPA WaterSense program labels efficient toilets that use a maximum 1.28 gpf.

•If the toilet is flushed an average of six times each day it will save 13 gallons per day or 4,745 gallons per year. Some older toilets may use as much as 7 gallons per flush.

•For more information and resources, visit the AWE Toilet Fixtures Introduction Page and WaterSense Labeled Toilets Page.

Check toilets to verify they are working properly.

•Make sure the water level is not too high, the fill valve is working properly, and the flapper is not leaking. A running toilet can waste hundreds of gallons of water per day.

•For more information on checking a toilet, visit the H2Ouse Water Saver Home Toilet Page.

Other

Check water bills for any instances of high water use, as this may be an indication of a leak.

•Leaking faucets, leaking toilets, and leaking pipes all have something in common, they waste a lot of water! Your water bill will often show abnormal water consumption if there is a leak. Many water utilities have information on how to read your water bill online. For more information and resources, visit the AWE Household Leaks Page.

Composting food wastes saves water by reducing the water needed to run a garbage disposal.

Pool owners can use a cover to reduce water loss through evaporation. A pool cover can also save energy and reduce the need for chemicals.

Sweep outdoor surfaces with a broom instead of using a hose.

Wash vehicles at a carwash that recycles its water. If washing at home, make sure the hose has a shutoff valve.

Quality & Attention to Detail – Guest Bathroom

This is a custom “spare”bathroom our technicians installed. The home owner picked out ever specific detail to make this bathroom its own room with details to set this bathroom apart. Not only is their decorative taste enjoyed in their own ensuite bathroom and kitchen, but also in the washroom’s their guests will be using.

Quality and attention to detail set this bathroom apart. A room that could easily be over looked or skimped on with less expensive fixtures and a plain decor design, however especially for a spare bathroom quailty is where you want to pay attention to, for a room which will not see as much use as what the ensuite will, you want to be sure with quality fixtures they will last long and stay functioning even when they are used only seldomly. It may financially make more sense to put less expensive fixtures in a spare bathroom, however these less expensive fixtures will not have the lifetime quality fixtures do and could fail much sooner. This guest bathroom truly does stand out and follows in line with the decor and design in the rest of the home. It is truly beautiful and although custom will be a design that will last a long time.
